Agreed get the codes read, you may get lucky just by changing the Autobox oil though.

are you absolutely sure it's an LSD you're putting in ?

it's easy to tell - they are the only one with 4-planets. If there are crossed shafts inside the diff when viewed up the driveshaft hole, then you've got LSD.

DO NOT underestimate a GM dealers capability to get it wrong. Getting the wrong oil will permanently knacker the diff. It's not just a case of draining and re-filling. Once that hypoid agent hits the friction plates they're ruined.

yep i think that may be the issue with my LSD thumping when hot due to someone fitting the wrong grade oil or its dam low since police had mine serviced last 20k ago!!
Easy way to tell if an lsd is fitted jack the car up so both rears off the floor & without handbrake on & auto in N spin 1 wheel if both go same way lsd fitted if other goes backwards its standard.

no, that's not a reliable test.

You'll find that some Omegas with open diffs do that, while some Omegas with LSD do the opposite. It just depends on how the tolerances stack up inside.

The diff, even though it's LSD still has planet wheels, and if the ramp is clean and the plate stack isn't too sticky then you'll get reverse rotation. Especially with a diff in really good condition.

the only really good way of telling is to pop out a driveshaft and count cross-pins

oh... ive got 3 vehicals with lsds ok 1 is a full detroit locker in my discovery but the omega both spin forward or both reverse & same with the diff in my morris ital using a lsd axel out of a tr7 again both spin forwards or rear but i can see what you mean how a standard diff could mimic an lsd if tight etc but under load will be open, & a slipper lsd with no load would do that clock anti clock test too...

an LSD still has planet wheels and the capability of providing reverse rotation whe tested with the wheels off the ground.

The LSD action is initiated by the planets sliding up a ramp and locking the diff.

So....

if the planets spin BEFORE they move up their ramps then you'll get reverse rotation.

If they move up the ramps first ( possible, even with the wheels in the air ) then you'll get the same rotation

in either case, the LSD function can still be working properly.
