Update:

I bought some new plugs from Vauxhall, turned out to be Beru ones anyway. I haven't had them fitted yet as I seem to remember reading on one of the threads that there can be an issue with leak off pipes giving the same syptoms?

The car is parked on a hill outside my house, facing downwards so I tried parking facing upwards last night and it started straight away this morning. Is this just coincindental or is it the pipes causing the problem? I spoke to a local garage who do work for me now and again and they said that the leak off pipes wouldn't cause poor starting.

Any thoughts before I have the plugs changed?

Thanks.
Are they familiar with Diesel engines? If the leak off pipes are leaking then they will let air into the system ::)

If they are leaking they can (and normally will) cause poor starting but in your case, the fact that with multiple pre-heats it started more easily, it sounds like the problem is more glow plugs ;)

I'd change the leak off pipes anyway as the cost is fairly small and they are prone to going ;)

^ makes sense, thanks for the reply. They are familiar with diesels, mainly Volvo's but I'm guessing they would be a similar set up.

Cheers.

Sounds like glow plugs to me too. If you parked the car facing up hill last night and it was fine I'd say that is not the leak off pipes. If they're leaking air will get into the system because the fuel will want to run back to the tank with it facing up hill. Get the plugs in and go from there. If you're changing them yourself give them a GOOD soak in Plus Gas or WD40 first for a couple of hours. Not good if they snap!

Yep... But if you're in there doing the glow plugs, may as well change the leak off pipes too for the sake of £20 and 5 minutes more work ;) ;)

My old Astra van used to eat leak off pipes for some strange reason, although there was something not quite right with that motor all along, and the second sign they were leaking again was poor starting ;) First sign was the smell of diesel in the engine bay :D :D

Haven't notice any smell of diesel, although I haven't had the bonnet open lately. Will check this out over the weekend. Thanks guys, much appreciated :)

If there's a leak in the fuel system parking it facing uphill will allow the fuel to flow back to the tank making it harder to start, its normally parking it facing downhill that helps

Well it must have been a coincindence, tried starting it this morning and it was a real pig so looks like the plugs will get fitted after all. I did however manage to free off the pasenger seat height adjuster so all good there now thanks to the link above. :)

Well the slightly milder weather has proven to be a god send, the car starts much easier so confirmation that the glow plugs are cream crackered I think.

On a different note, does anyone have a beige glove box catch please? I don't need to lock it so no key required, it would be nice to be able to open it without scaping the skin of my finger! PM me if you have, thanks.

I would if I had one, the whole catch is completely missing.

Let us know if the glow plugs cure your starting problems. I have a 2.2 dti cdx saloon 51 plate. and had much the same issues as you describe..Would not start after being parked all night facing uphill. I renewed the leak off pipes, but it only improved things a little. I think I still have a problem with fuel running back to the tank, but its not as bad as it was. I think the previous owner must have had trouble as well, because there is one of those squeezy bulbs with a one way valve in it under the bonnet, and when I have trouble starting I use it to get the fuel through.
Also the little heater under the front o/s wing was leaking coolant, so I removed it and took it to bits to see what the trouble was, turned out it was rotten inside, so I binned it. And blocked the fuel pipe that feeds it. and  joined the coolant pipes together.
