A few issues with my 2.2dti
« on: 04 February 2012, 16:37:37 »

Hi guys,

I've just joined this great forum and would be grateful for a little advice please.

I recently bought a CDX 2.2dti estate and the first thing I have noticed is it's extremely difficult to start from cold. It cranks for about twenty seconds or so before if fires up and when it does there is quite a lot of white/grey smoke coming from what looks like a mini exhaust pipe mounted just in front of the offside from wheel, under the front bumper. I have been told that there is a common fault on the 2.2 diesel with injector seals leaking and also that glow plugs can cause these symptoms. Once it has started the first time is starts fine until the engine goes stone cold again. Anyone have any experience with this issue?

The passenger heated seat doesnt work, neither does the height adjustment. When you switch the heated seat on the dash light comes on ok but nothing happens. When the height adjuster switch is pressed you can hear/feel the motor 'thump' but it appears to be stuck. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Leigh.

How many times to you heat the plugs before starting? When it's very cold they need two or three warms before they go.
The exhaust is normal. I asked the same question four years ago when I purchased mine  ;D

Hi Pete,

thanks for the reply. I have only heated them once to be honest. Never heard of heating them several time before. I have three other diesel vehicles (vans) and they go first time.

Hi re the seat have a look under the rear of the front seat and you will see the threaded bar that lifts/lowers the seat, on the end of the bar is a plasic cover remove this cover and insert a small socket over the nut that is inside the sleeve and turn the nut this will raise and lower the seat and if the motor is jammed for some reason this may free it off (it worked with mine)

I bet when this car was new it did not take two a three warms before starting up.

Possible heater plugs    compressions   Lift pump in the tank   pump filter blockage

Is the idle speed ok

How many miles on the clock?

Don't think there is a lift pump on the 2.2dti. I have had 2 2.2dti now and cold starting was never the best but put some new glow plugs in and also look at the black plastic fuel spill return pipes as they are known to leak air back to the take when old (new pipe kit about £16 from dealer) also check seal on fuel filter cap.

Idle speed seems fine @ 750rpm. 100k on the clock.

Well I tried heating the plugs three times this morning and she started much easier, still not as easy as I feel it should be but a great improvement :y. Should I be looking to replace the plugs now?

Yes and get decent ones.

As for the smoke from the front wheel arch, the setup has a diesel heater on it to warm the coolant up faster, its this that your seeing.

Update:

I bought some new plugs from Vauxhall, turned out to be Beru ones anyway. I haven't had them fitted yet as I seem to remember reading on one of the threads that there can be an issue with leak off pipes giving the same syptoms?

The car is parked on a hill outside my house, facing downwards so I tried parking facing upwards last night and it started straight away this morning. Is this just coincindental or is it the pipes causing the problem? I spoke to a local garage who do work for me now and again and they said that the leak off pipes wouldn't cause poor starting.

Any thoughts before I have the plugs changed?

Thanks.
