omega 3.2 facelift engine stops/cuts out
« on: 20 February 2012, 20:05:12 »

Dear All,
I wonder if any of you on this fabulous forum might be able to help.I have a 2001 omega 3.2 facelift elite 68k miles and its driving me nuts.
After I got the car,i changes both cam covers.WHen i bought the car the tick over was slightly lumpy but sat around 500rpm.
There was some oil in wells on one side and scuttles were full of water.Cleaned scuttle,re-sealed cover around windscreen and wipers and followed all the good advice on the site.
Then a few weeks back..the engine just cut out.Left it 10 minds and started again.
Fault codes 0335,0340,1500  i think from memory.
Changed crank shaft sensor with gen VX part correct for year/engine.
ECU codes checked at Roadrunner,Chester and all was great for 2 weeks
This time codes 0560 1500 0340.
Ive checked /cleaned throttle body, cleaned all breathers, checked for any vac leaks ,ceck all plugs are clean and wiring not pulled,as best i can.]
Ive also made sure crank sensor and cam sensor are both seated correctly.
Ive also noticed that  when putting all electrics on when at tick over, revs drop to point where engine might stop, lights dim then engine returns to 500 ish rpm...it never seems to increase. This glitch is 1/2 seconds almost as if there isnt enough power in the system.
So basically i still have the engine stopping on occasion, cranking it repeated sometime starts...its just like the crank sensor is failing but no code this time...sesnor is a month old genuine part from VX
Has anyone got any ideas...any advice or help would be appreciated!!
Many thanks

Code 0340

Code 0340 is cam sensor, very rare to fail on V6.  Not caught cable when you did cam covers?  Reliable enough to use a known good 2nd hand one.

Wonder if worth cleaning out breathers and TB is worthwhile, in case throttle is sticky...

Hi thanks for advice
Breathers have been cleaned 8 weeks ago.
Throttle body looked fairly clean but i gave it the once over anyway.
I have seen on here that cam sensors rarely fail but i changed it any case.
It almost seems like its not getting enough volts as when i put all lights on heated seats etc and load it up the engine rpm doesnt increase as i thought it might. Also when you load the the electrics up its almost as if the engines about to stall then it seems to pick up back to 500 rpm or so.
The lumpy tickover was happening before changed camcover gaskets.
Checked battery voltages and they seem within the parameters suggested.
So in summary ive done cam cover gaskets and new cam covers, plugs, airfilter, cleaned breathers, crank sensor and cam sensor and its still not right. On occassion the engine just stops whilst at tickover and spanner light stays on.If i try to do pedal test it just stays on and will not flash.Once ive got it started again the spanner light will flash for fault codes!!
My thoughts are ECU,over/undervoltage on alternator or throttle body motor fault....does anyone have any other ideas!
Its been suggested that Elite Pete might be the the saviour here!!

Just because your crank sensor is genuine Vx and brand new don't assume its not faulty - I had a Vx one fail within 1 month!!

I just thought i would say a big thank you to Jimbob who very kindly came and read the codes on my elite...it was very kind and i am grateful.
Its great to know that there  are such genuine, decent people around thanks.
Well with Jimbobs guidance the engine runs again.
I have return the VX crankshaft sensor to VX deeside...that are going to send it off for testing so we wait and see..400 miles in 4 weeks and it might be faulty!!
I will post their response.
Lets see if it behaves itself this time
Again thanks to all who have offered advice...i wish i joined here years ago when i got my first omega!!

One question has any one any experience of spanner light staying on continuosly whilst cranking engine and engine not starting.
Caused me a real problem as it couldnt get light to flash on pedal test.
Could only get pedal test to work when i eventually got engine to run!!

How did you manage a pedal test with engine running  :-\

If not flashing when attempting pedal test, maybe no codes....

Yes

When my crank sensor failed on both my old 2.5 and my current 2.6.

I assume that the ECU is reporting 31 or 0335 until it starts to see pulses from the crank sensor.

Can't comment on the pedal trick not working for you though  :(

I managed to do a pedal test when we eventually got it running.
Jimbob was the saving grace with his flashy computer!!
The main problem before Jimbobs kind intervention was that the engine would crank but not start.
If i attempted pedal test, spanner symbol would stay on ie not flash.
I wouldnt allow me to read codes.
I have seen on various forums engine running with spanner symbol illuminated but not this fault.
SO far it has run well since second crankshaft sensor change.
Has anyone sent a sensor back to VX and managed to get a refund after they have tested it??
