Boiler fan stopped electric fault , i took the front cover off and it was red hot from the pilot light  Quickly turned the gas off . Big thanks to martin42 on here for giving me some info on fault finding ...ive traced what seems to be the internal 2A fuse that has blown ....thing is though why  going to replace the fuse tomorrow and see what happens , could the lightning storms we had today have caused this  It was ok this morning when we used the hot water then we went out , come back and no electric on the boiler at all

fan might be jammed up or a fault on the circuit board,but it could be ok tho once fuse is replaced

Hope so or we will be washing in the tin tub filled with warm water from the kettle

Bearings in the fan often dry out and sieze up. Worth checking if it'll spin freely, although that wouldn't cause the fuse to fail, IMHO.

depends what type of fan it is as was told the fans fitted too baxi boilers are the worst you can only expect to get 3-4 years out of them but fuses can just blow...they get what a sparky called it the other day...tired....

It spins freely kevin and no funny electrical burning smell either .... fuse was all black when i took it out

Its not a baxi its an Alpha 280  Hoping it is the fuse .... wont know till i get back this afternoon after my  2nd MRI scan

I nursed an unloved Alpha through seven years at my last house. I swore at it a lot (especially when the hot water goes in the middle of winter), and it did need messing about with every year.

However, if you ring up Alpha, you will get to speak to someone in this country, who knows what they are talking about and will probably have heard your exact scenario before, or at the least will be friendly and helpful - 01732 783 000 - I rang them enough times :-)

Pack of ten 2A fast blow fuses ...popped one in , power back onto the main panel and the fan is working a treat  gave it a good hoovering out . Thanks martin for pointing me in the right direction .... just need to service the car now 

Mystery how it blew though ...maybe a power surge .
