no heat from heater
« on: 30 September 2012, 12:24:01 »

Hi I have not had any heat from the heater for about 2 years with winter closing in I must rectify this some how. My friend said try changing the heater control valve, I have done this with no luck, I have tried removing the vacuum pipe on top of the heater control valve and when you swap from hi to low it does suck. I felt the hoses attached to the heater control valve the hose on its own and the hose on the top of the two hoses together are hot but the hose out of the two on the same side ( bottom of the two ) isn't as hot, not sure what that means, also read you should feel the two hoses attached to the bulk head entering the inside of the car, I read that if one isn't as hot as the other it could be the matrix ? .( one isn't as hot ) I am trying to avoid the additional work of changing the thermostat as I am not sure if that is the problem. Is there any tell tail signs that point out what the real problem can be, and if it is the thermostat is it really that bad to change . thank you for any replies . :-\

Hmmm, sounding like a blocked matrix.

Wonder if its worth trying to flush out  :-\

As The Boy suggests, I'd also say your matrix is blocked. One hose is hotter than than the other because you don't have a flw through the matrix, you've got hot water to it, but as there's no water going through it, the exit hose is cold-er. Try your garden hose in both direction through it.
My Dad's Granada hed similar problems. He removed the hoses & then extended them upwards so that he go disolve a dishwasher tablet in there. Although eneded up replacing the matrix in the end (piece of cake compared to an Omega), it did make an improvement

I've had this problem since we bought the car 8 years ago.  I finally got round to changing the matrix a couple of days ago and boy what a difference, lovely hot air at last.  Not saying this is your problem, but it does sound very like it.  I tried all sorts of other solutions before finally convincing myself that it was the matrix.
There is an excellent comprehensive guide on here to changing the matrix without removing the dashboard for which I must say my thanks, and I have taken some extra photos to clarify a couple of points if anybody wants them.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Ask Jimbob if they can be added to the guide :)
