Got to admit, I laughed my socks off when I heard this yesterday, like something out of Monty Python.
Not really funny...........I suppose ::)

Of course  .... we all instantly forget that it is not many weeks since 2 of Lancashires finest attended an innocent sounding burglary and were shot/grenaded to death ... I'm sure such a scenario never even entered the officers head .. he is far too intelligent/highly trained for such a thing to occur.

I'm sorry, but there is a real world out there, in which we expect Human's to cope with many things.

Whilst not a policeman, or police trained, I have had to give the "forget your best mate was killed by the taliban .. you must ignore your feelings and abide by the RoE" speech on more than one occasion .... knowing full well that the recipient will be more nervous, and more "twitchy" simply because of the occurence... the psychiatrists had a fancy term for it ...something like "reverse conditioning reflex" if memory serves.

I have no doubt this was a ****up of the first degree, I also have no doubt that the officer is sitting somewhere thinking "what a stupid prat I am", I also have no doubt that AT THE TIME, said officer, for WHATEVER reason, THOUGHT he was doing the right thing.

I'm sure is says in there that the subject must be a lethal threat to either  him /herself or a member of public that he is tasked to protect.
Also positive identification should be attained of the threat and clear verbal warnings should be issued before discharging any weapon if possible.

Shocking.

Blind not deaf, but as he says, how would he know immediately that the officer was shouting at him.

I can imagine being there in the heat of the moment to the  "Oh 'dangle berries'" moments later.

A Tazer is an "up close & personal" weapon, and if the old bill that deployed that weapon against someone carrying a white stick, then (ignorining the "rules of engagement" the old bill have to live by), the copper concerned needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law because there is no way on this earth you can possibly mistake a white stick for an offensive weapon IMHO.

However we know that isn't going to happen in real life, so don't be surprised when you encounter an old bill that thinks they know it all and then gets away with shooting you for opps all (aka Jean Paul De Menezez).
