Help with a locking wheel nut please!?
« on: 24 February 2013, 12:04:39 »

To say I hate these things would be an undestatement.

Went to change my rear wiper on my 4x4 . Couldn't - insufficient room without removing spare wheel bolted to rear door. Couldn't get spare wheel off as locking wheel nut key won't undo "bolt". It is a standard cylinder with a key that inserts in the end of the barrel. Once removed you can then get a wheel nut socket on it. I had it off 12 months ago so I know it works and is the right and only key. No manufacturer name on the device or key. Key just has R009 on it.

I have had it soaking in plus gas for 24 hours and also tried heating it up. also gently hammer tapping. My fall back I guess is to try and drill  or angle grind the sleeve off. Access is fairly good compared to say on an Omega alloy wheel.

Any suggestions welcome!

Hateful things and would never fit them , burnt the ones off my carlton with a gas torch ..made the wheels a bit black but it was the only way  >:( . Some have hammered a socket over it once the outer ring is cut off  :-\

I used to have these on my caravan leg locks. The only way I could remove them was by pulling the sleeve up at the same time as pulling the key and barrel out, if that makes sense. In other words, it was a two handed job. You may have tried that though.  :-\

Whack an old large screwdriver into it and it should then turn

They already turn. Putting the key in allows the barrel and sleeve to pull straight out of the end of the nut/bolt.  ;)

a slide hammer will pull the middle out, I have a few sets of those on various cars, make sure the lock is well greased.
