All the sites ive been on to check the oil grade are saying 5-30 why would they state that if that grade shaggs the engine/oil pump
Ive been out to the car today started it and left it ticking over for about 45 mins and the light hasn't flashed once so maybe the engine aint shagged and the oil pump is ok
The state a Fully Synthetic oil purely to stretch the servicing interval (which may appease fleet managers and Vx salesmen, but is detrimental to engine longevity). Because that is what the manufacturer states, that is what every semin official resource will state.
If that diesel engine has had 20k services over its 120k life, I'll wager that its way past its best

. Remember on diesels, the oil goes quite abrasive after a relatively short time (3-5k), as the oil picks up and holds the blow-by particulates. This is why diesels turn their oil black so quickly.
The oil light flickering at idle is a classic sign of a worn engine. It *may* be a faulty oil pressure switch, but these normally either work or not, not give inaccurate readings, hence my worries. I hope I'm wrong.
A thicker oil will help to keep the oil pressure up a bit at idle if the oil pump is tired.
I hope that helps explain things a little

To know for definate, you need to slap an oil pressure gauge on it, and measure the oil pressure when the oil is very hot and the engine is at idle, and compare that to GM specs.
