Which handbrake side is the longer?
« on: 28 September 2013, 21:46:54 »

OE03EWW 3.2 petrol manual saloon
I am changing the handbrake cable. I have changed them before. I read in the maintenance guide that the cable lengths are different. I have already removed the old cable, assuming both cables were the same length. Which side is the longer?

Me too  :-\
Only a job I've done once - MFL 2.5 - but I can't see them being any different across the range  ???

IIRC the off side one is a touch shorter, as the nearside one has to clear the exhaust :y

On EPC they look identical but both come as one kit - part number 90374841

The cable assembly is effectively a single unit consisting of two cables connected by a bar, sandhould be identical accross the range :y

Changed mine six months ago and vaguely recall the routing not being symmetrical, hence one side being a touch longer...

Guess Terry has found one side longer, hence the question :-\

No, I have changed two or three in  my time, and never thought the lengths were different. Yesterday I read the maintenance guide after removing the old cable and before installing the new cable, and found to my alarm that I had to be careful to install the two cables the right way round. I measured the new (aftermarket) cables, they seemed to be the same length, so I did not worry about it. Cable is now installed, and handbrake action much improved. The old one had got very stiff, so much so that the poor return springs could barely cope. I found it quite a tricky job, even with a pit. It must be awful crawling under the car all the while.

In no real rush to do it again ::) but it was easier to do on the ground than a clutch change ;D

Glad sorted :y
