« on: 18 November 2013, 11:36:39 »

what will happen if I run the car with the MAF not conected??
will it through up more codes? I ask as mine will now only run with the MAF disconecteda and have not got £160 to buy a new one.
car is a 3.2 on a 01 plate.

You will certainly get the EML light and I imagine it is then running on some kind of 'default' data for mixture etc

Ebay / breaker here for  replacement MAF - go for a genuine used one rather than some cheap copy. There is a risk that is may not be any good, but much cheaper. Worked well for my 2.2.

Whilst there is a limp-home function that means it will run without a MAF, you will have horribly inaccurate fuelling which may go on to damage cats and lambda sensors if you do this for longer than required for a quick test. Better to spend the money on a MAF.

As said, it's imperative that a genuine MAF sensor is used. Pattern parts just aren't fit for purpose here. 2nd hand is a bit of a lottery as well, IMHO, but if needs must...

I had maf codes come up on my 3.2 whilst on holiday, got home ordered new maf (gen). Then changed it still gave code, turned out to be a faulty coil pack, which was then replaced, replaced the new maf for the alleged faulty one, worked fine. So i check plugs and coil pack first, might save you £100, coilpack are £80.

Yes, remember the stored code is only telling you that the ECU sees an inconsistent MAF reading for the engine operating conditions. It's not telling you that the MAF is faulty! Live data is the best way to check if the MAF is telling lies.

Not everybody has the luxury of live data, i used the information i had and found it inconsistent,so looked at other areas that might have caused the problem.

P0170 and P0173 would encourage you to check out the MAF for sure, plus O2 sensor function and possible air leaks but the general view from all I've seen on OOF (and I did have a MAF issue on my 2.6 with these two codes) is that the 2.6 & 3,2 MAF's degrade over time rather than completely fail. 2.5 and 3.0 MAF's seem to completely fail requiring immediate replacement.

You may wish to investigate all of the other codes/potential issues before running with a disconnected MAF on 3.2 because 3.2 MAF's tend to degrade gradually?

I had the issue whilst in Europe and whilst the long term fuel trims (FT) were out enough to throw the codes, the car got me home and a new OEM MAF sorted the issue, no more codes and FT now normal! Live data helps you make the decision though especially regarding FT.

So, you have a fuel trim issue on both banks and misfires but only on the 2,4,6 bank.  :-\

Could be the MAF, but why misfiring only on one bank? It could equally be an air leak into one bank or perhaps oil in the 2,4,6 plug wells. This is where you'd need live data to check if the fuel trims on the two banks have both gone the same way (MAF) or diverged (lambda sensor issue or air leak, etc). In addition, you can check the MAF sensor output with the engine idling.

Most OBDII code readers can do live data and they are pretty cheap. You might even have used one to get these codes?

Regarding the P0650 - worth checking that both the engine management and emissions lights on the dash are working.

P1700 is actually "Service Vehicle Soon Request from Transmission Control Module". It seems the gearbox has had a fault at some point. Might be due to the misfiring of the engine or an incorrect load signal due to the MAF, though, so probably best to resolve that first.

The above issues are what i had,  and as i said it was the coil pack, and a slight vacum leak on the servo hose. Maf was ok. :)
