Zafira 1.9 Diesel Economy / Warmup
« on: 30 March 2014, 07:17:44 »

Ive noticed (no idea if its changed) that the Zafira seems a bit slow becoming economical.

Sat at about 50 mph, It gets mid 30's to the gallon for 18 minutes, then it jumps to mid 60's.
external temp was about 7oC
Wasnt watching car temp as it has no guage and you need to do a few keypresses to get it on the MID.

Question is, what changed at about the 18 minute mark?  If it was petrol, id be thinking Lambda's gone closed loop, dont know if this applies with diesels.  Or maybe something thermostat related?

When I get a chance I will do a similar trip and record the live data so see what changes, but anyone got any ideas, or have similar car to detail your experiences?

Stat going lazy? Until fully warmed, I think some diesels don't use EGR etc.

Does it have a DPF? Could it have been regenerating?

Is DPF, good call, but no regen occuring.

Lazy stat is in my mind.
Be interesting to get the cold to warm time from MDTM

How easy/difficult is the 'stat to get to? You could just change it anyway.

Whats the cabin heater like? Should be blowing warm air after a couple of mins.....if thats slow to get hot as well, then yes i'd suspect the thermostat

I do get warm air fairly soon, I dont have my cars hot to really notice the cabin temp.  not struck me as an issue through

Hmmm.... can MR DTM tell you at what temp the ecu stops telling the engine to overfuel (cold start)
Then i think its a case of, start engine form cold....press the buttons to show engine temp on MID...and see when it gets to that temp...

Or you could just start it from cold.....and feel the temp of top and bottom hoses on the rad...then obviously....if its a knackered stat they will both get warm together  :y

Monitored the coolant on the way home. Now it started 25 degrees warmer than this morning then took about 10 mins to reach 85. It varied between 79 and 88 over the 30 miles. 82/3 being about the normal

CDTi runs at about 80-85 degrees as normal.

Mine takes some time to get to temperature, about 5 -8 miles (Its a diesel so no surprise) I would say but still runs pretty economicaly over that distance.

The engine does use the EGR a lot (as per most diesels) to speed warm up time up so its worth cleaning that if its not been done recently.

Egr and boost sensor cleaned. Saw on another forum they are often worth doing together. Both were very gunged up.

Car took a bit of starting afterwards.

On the test drive. Nearly bent it leaving my road as it took off somewhat more than I was expecting. Certainly have more reponsiveness, economy seemed better too but time will tell.
