Oh well time for some big toe advice.
It is possible to recover a knackered nail. You need the following tools.
Scapel (No11 is excellent) antisceptic, possible ibuprofen.
The ingrowing is caused by over trimmed nails, and the corners dig in.
you find that the edge of the nail is pointed and is carving up your toe.
This point MUST go.
Take painkillers, disinfect the blade (use a new one - not one after making 10 model aircraft), and disinfect your toe.
Wipe away any pus, possibly even use a salty water.
Now go for it, poke down the front for the pointy bit, use sharp edge up not down, and when you locate the point carve it off.
Apply more antisceptic.
Squeeze out rest of pus and rest.
Keep toe clean and disinfected and wait for nail to grow, if it starts to stick in, check for points, any there - carve off.
Takes about two weeks to do, but now my big toe nails are fine - but eat socks, I file them now, no risk from sissors or knives and cutting to close - generating a new pointy bit to rot my toe.
BUt my files are blunt from too much normal use so wet & dry will do

As to missing digits - I had a thumb removed at 9 months old, the other half is missing a tendon and looks horrible, right thumb is fine
