Hi guys,

Was driving at a steady 85mph on my private track in my mum's Ford. Burning smell appeared. Dropped speed and it went away. Went back up to and it came back..... wtf?

The only thing I can think of is checking for any wires coming in to contact with the exhaust manifold. 

Any other ideas?

it was defo not coming in from outside..... it did it again when I tested it today.

If a cable has made contact with anything remotely hot, then it will be stuck there no matter what speed you do (and hence, smell).

Outside shot, but maybe a head or rocker gasket that is a bit weak when the oil pressure gets ramped up and is spurting on to the exhaust manifold?

I would be thinking slipping belt first, particularly as it went off when you reduced speed......

That's an excellent point! Only problem is the aux belt needs special kit to get off/on. Would there be signs I can look out for of a slipping belt? And I'm presuming we're talking aux belt and not timing belt bearing in mind the car runs very sweet?

Only burning that worried me was in the Omega that day , you kind of know what sort of different smell rubber gives off .. tyre smoke being different from aux / cam belt smell 
Or like engine oil burning is a different smell to gearbox . Diff oil stinks  Having owned a few Fords the smell of oil became a regular occurrence especially in the Mk 3 escort

The MK3 had to be the biggest (and weakest) piece of crap from the Escort line IMHO.

My Mk3 wasnt too bad , used 4 litres of oil a month  Luckily i had an endless supply of machine oil at the time

  My Mk3 used 2 litres a week. Almost a two stroke mix ratio
