Spark Plugs - Torque setting?
« on: 01 February 2014, 22:12:01 »

Just changed mine.

Found that plug no3 had worked itself loose. :(

When I put the new ones in I couldn't find a recommended torque setting so I nipped them up and then gave them another 60 degrees (because it felt 'right').

Is there a 'correct' torque setting?

Car is all back together now. I have no intention of removing the inlet manifold, cable tray and coil packs again just to check the torque settings  :(

I am fairly confident that they are all tighter than 25Nm but I might go and play with a torque wrench (on the bench) just to reassure myself.

Never personally torqued spark plugs on any car - as you say tighten sensibly and all will be well - down to experience I guess :y

As master said a while back, the washers on the plugs can relax after torquing. It's there for worth a re torque to make sure they are settled. Before it's put back together. ;)

If you change them regularly, they don't get time to work loose :y

Also no need to remove the inlet unless you're needing to get to the oil cooler/thermostat/coolant bridge :y

And having had to helicoil spark plug holes on three Omegas now for others after people thought they know how tight they need to be....I would recommend a torque wrench everytime (as it takes no extra time and means its done right everytime  :y)

Providing of course they know how to use one. Experience should also tell you to stop If the wrench has failed . . .which isn't unheard of
