(Rant) BT 141
« on: 08 May 2014, 15:37:58 »

Unless I am calling a friend I allways use 141 to withhold my number.

Rang some one (Buisiness number)today who casusually asked if I wanted to use the number I rang on as my main contact number, to which I replied that I dont give out my home number as its ex directory for a reason and they casually read me out the number that I had rung them on.

I checked that I had used 141, then rang my mobile with 141 in front and confirmed to myself that it worked as my mobile said private number.

Rang BT151 and ended up going round in circles with a female indian operative, then the same with her indian boss, who neither of them could give a reply to a simple question.

Finally got put through to the UK and spoke to a "Geordie" lad who went and did a proper check with his manager and went through thier terms and conditions to find me any helpfull information.

It seems that the 141 system should work in all cases except on the numbers starting with the numbers posted below.

Sadly they cant help me on where I can report this company to as I feel they have invaded my privacy and am far from happy about it.

Numbers starting with
999
112
100
155
198
0800 Reverse
have the facility to show the number of the caller.

Does anyone know where I can report this company to.    (Makes me wonder how information is gained and then sold on to cold callers, maybe this is part of the reason. )

TIA  :y

141 doesn't actually hide your number, it just tells the recieving part not to display it, theres a lot more than on your list, 141 over a International call rarely works, as do a lot of Call Centres, and Vaule Added Voice services.

I could connect a gizmo up to an incoming line and read a withheld number, nothing wrong with that, unless, of course I use that information for other gains.

BT do not give a **** about their customers, only how much they can make from them. Hence, they sell your number/data to whomever will buy.
I had an issue with my broadband charges a couple of weeks ago and had a similar experience to yours, Mr. Skrunts - I had the tour of India and was passed around from one unintelligible incompetent to another, and when all else failed they took me to scotland!
No resolution of my issue, so I am now with Sky, and what a difference in customer service!

Lots of companies are allowed to receive your callerid regardless of your withhold settings. Taxis. Takeaways etc all have very valid reasons to see your number. I beleive they are only allowed to use it for the purpose of that transaction else fall foul of the data protection act

We could use payg mobiles, or drop boxes and when that fails, enigma machines. What have you got to hide that GCHQ don't all ready know. And as for ppi calls and alike just have fun with them :y
