My five year maximum at point of licensing is a real pita sometimes :-\... there are some lovely older cars which would do the job perfectly...

Is that not a council to council rule? I've seen some right sheds, way older than 5 years that are licensed taxi's  :-\
Different councils interpret the basic rules differently, but round here, the car must be plated within five years of registration date. Once plated, it can be replated until such time as it stops passing its inspections. The inspections here are twofold, both six monthly. One is an extended Mot with no advisories and includes body damage, tother is an appointment with the licensing officer, and includes a meter and condition/cleanliness check. The oldest car here is a '52 plate Octavia. Had I put a new plate on the Insignia rather than transfering it from the Omega, then I would still be using the Omega... ultimately it would have been replaced with an E Class, but perhaps not so soon ::)

Good to know  :y

Could have charged a premium for those punters rushing to catch a flight.. given the "jam busting" gadgets you've now installed, too. :-X

Suddenly, the reason you only buy white cars becomes apparent... ;D
