tried them, just turning on the head, couldnt get one small enough

The irwin set listed on here begin at 10mm......however they do an 8mm one as well.......what size did you try....

looking at easy out kits on ebay just now but doubt they will be much use

I wouldn't. Admitedly I'm a clutz, but, I've never got an easy out to work, and using one has always resulted in a bad situation getting worse. When you snap one off in the bolt it's game over for virtually any other extraction method excepting weld a nut on. So you may as well just weld the nut on and skip the frustration.
