Right all new to me at the moment so bear with me.

Been playing with one of those £9 Sky NowTV boxes, which by the way is excellent for all the TV Catch Up stuff, but pretty dismal for the Skys own stuff in terms of content and picture quality through HDMI, still its all free for the first month or so, so watchable.

So having got bored with all that, Ive put the NowTV box in developer mode and installed a Roku Plex App on the box, (the RARflix one), I then Installed Plex Server App on the Lappy, all good, and whacked some of my Movies in the Plex Folder Drive for testing through the NowTV Box, again all good, actually works very well as a Home Streamer, except I do get some minor buffering occasionally, so having looked into it a bit further, it appears that the NowTV Box is streaming the content through the Internet via my Lappy Plex Server IP address rather then directly across my Network?

Ive played around with both the Box and the Server settings, theres not much to play around with tbh, its all a bit plug and play, but I cant seem to find anything that actually confirms or adjusts Network settings etc, so now Im a bit stuck.

Anyone using Plex, or have a Roku Box, or better still played around with the NowTV Box in Developer Mode? that can shed some light for me. could be the Sky Box isnt designed to do it through the Local Network, but end of the day it is just a revamped Roku Box.

Only just got in to Plex myself, but that's only because I access it from my brother's NAS box over a VM Big Kahuna conection using a Chromecast.

What I can tell you is that my brother has no problems streaming internally, and we are sweet as a nut after the first 30 seconds or so getting it in 720p at our end.
I know it streams internally without any issues but then again my brother may have found something that you have missed if there are different settings for the two.

I should be seeing him over this weekend, so I'll show him this post if you haven't had a resolution by then.

Plex on the nowtv SHOULD automatically find the local PMS and stream from there.
It should also show any libraries remotely shared with you.
Cant think of any plex settings to change that, nor should your firewall be hiding the internal one.
From memory the NOWTV shouldnt find your library if they are not on the same local network, without signing in as your username.
I dont have a nowtv box to check with as that is at my sisters house, I access plex though a smart tv app, via chromecast, or over the internet personally,

Have Plex on a Roku 2 box which was downloaded from their app store, It's been simple to use without any issues...

Maybe a NowTV box specific problem?

Sorry, can't help, I couldn't get on with Plex, and it didn't integrate at all with WMC, so I've stuck with Xboxes and RPis (and the new one is fantastic)

Hmm, well Ive set the whole thing using passwords, used the same passwords over Plex that I use for the Now Sky ID, thinking that would make things easier, maybe I should change that.  :-\

Thanks Jim, yep checked that now and yes its ticked.

To be honest the Plex set up all seems a bit to simple, I know what it does and I know what I want to do, maybe its me or Im a bit old school, like to be in control and all that stuff rather than relying on an App to do things for me.  :-\

Ok, think its sorted now, just did a complete rip out and re install on both the TV Box and the lappy and made sure I got all the lastest versions, only difference this time is it asked me for a Plex Passcode number from the Box to my Plex Account, so now streams through the Local Network.

Still get some buffering here and there when streaming, but think I'll put that down to the Transcoding from the Media Server being used on the Lappy rather than a dedicated PC Server.

When using plex quality really depends on the capacity of your network and the machine the server software is running on.

As it is wifi only the roku will share bandwidth with the rest of your wifi devices (unless you setup a separate debicate wifi AP for it.

I have it running on a 8 core 8 gig machine and a dedicated AP on a cisco switch and it is bearable.  Honestly, i am looking other options with the rPi 2 or Odroid running xbmc instead.  Its a shame because i like the plex interface.

Hmm, so as I thought probably a non starter with a win7 simple Lappy and standard Network, do like Plex in terms of its Film Auto Metadata etc, still not the end of the world, its only a £9 Restricted Ruko Box,

Also noticed an App that came with the NowTV box called PlayTo, had a play, couldn't get the thing to work from the Lappy or Win Mobile, then downloaded the Andriod Playto app to my Nokia, sure enough works a charm through the NowTV Box, a simple app that can beam your Phones Media or internet stream from the Mobile or SC Card through the box. Once beamed you can use the NowTV Remote to control the Media. Ok, not exactly a Home Server but and guessing its not Transcoding ie off the Fly, so if it plays on the Phone it will play through the Box. Still a simple way of doing things, espeically if your away from Home or on your Hols.  ;)

Yeah I can't get PlayTo working either.  Nice idea but obviously flawed and their support is still to get back to me........
