A lot of truth in what you say, Nick, I recently insulated a loft in Bradford by pulling down the lath & plaster and fitting insulated stuff. The vast amount of dirt up there ws amazing, the only way it could have got there was from the air surrounding the house that has been pulled into the roof space by thermal effects.

Interesting to hear that its the sea that pulls most of the CO2 out, it must be getting a bit carbonic acid by now.
I'm not saying air polution is getting worse, I'm just saying its enough to cause respiratory problems like I'm now stuck with. Did they have asthma back in the days of coil fires everywhere ?. If not it might be diesel fumes causing it. BAN DIESELS !.

I haven't looked into the ice cap/methane thing, its just what I heard. I wonder how it got there in the first place ?, shows this old Earth has been through some changes in her life.

Re the cooling/heating thing, I think it is worrying if the level of resources we keep wasting causes a change to our environment. If it does then its a powerful weapon to get governments to do something, even if the actual change is minimal. And by the time MP's figure out they've been had...............

Maybe I need to explain that the oceans absorb more CO2 when they are cooler and degas when they are warmer (by the same principle, a warm can of beer froths more readily than a cold one). The oceans have an 'acidity' measured on a pH scale of around 8.0, a figure larger than neutral pH=7.0, which means that they are alkaline or basic. More CO2 would result in reduced alkalinity, rather than acidification per se.

However, the story is not that simple, since plankton, decomposing bacteria, subterranean plant and animal life, and rocks all play a part in the carbon cycle. CO2 readily dissolves in pure water but, as I understand it, this effect is non-linear, i.e. it dissolves less as the pH is reduced.

Just to back up what i claimed earlier:

Trees absorb one-fifth of CO2 emissions:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/forests/4690299/Trees-absorb-a-fifth-of-carbon-emissions-pumped-out-by-humans.html

Oceans absorb one-half of CO2 emissions:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/07/0715_040715_oceancarbon.html

There is an accounting problem, though, as some CO2 seems to go missing. It is likely that it disappears into the general biosphere. Plant-life thrives with increased CO2...which is helpful for food production.
