The modified X-Clamp kit is £5 and a bit of change, and takes about 30 minutes if you are confident.
If you don't have any electronic experience, I'd advise you to pass it on (with the X-Clamp kit fitting instructions) to somebody who does.

I would take it into work and ask an expert.There are more electronic eggheads than you could shake a stick at,which is handy as I struggle with wiring a plug.

That's fine, just prep them up that the fitting instructions include running the X-Box up for 15 minutes or so without any heatsink fitted to the GPU...while you have the entire console wrapped in a towel (so the surface mount GPU solders itself back in to place)..
