Long Weekend Test Rides
« on: 02 September 2009, 10:44:08 »

Since my parents are away this weekend, and i have Thursday and Friday off, i am planning a few test rides for some motorbikes.

I have only ever ridden 2 bikes, ER5 & MT-03. I want to try some more just to get some experiance.

Got a lot of local dealers around my way, so far the list is:

Honda VFR800 - Really like the look of it, reviews say its built well, and new VTEC engine makes it shift.

Harley VRSC (liquid cooled one) - Looks quite nice, not sure on the riding position or handling, but want to try!

BMW GS 1200 - Ever since I watched long way around i have wanted to try one, upright riding position which is what i like and good touring capabilities.

Won't be changing till next year but as i have a few days off want to have some fun before whats likey a very busy contracting period over xmas.

I want something with a bit more touring capabilties, and a bit more grunt. I love the MT, but next year i think its time to move on.

If you like the Beemer, then have a look at a Guzzi.

Guzzi's & their ilk have never really been my type of bike (I'm more in to streetfighters), however after riding my mates 1100 injection Guzzi (California Special) I'd thoroughly recommend one if you are the cruiser type.

It's so comfortable at 90mph (thats only 3000rpm on a Guzzi), you truly wouldn't believe you are moving that quickly until you check the speedo.
Fuel consumption is good on them as well, I was easily pulling 50mpg + when I had it for a few days (no 1100cc Jap bike is returning them fuel figures).

Only downside I could see was that the seat height was a bit high (the old lady could only make tip-toe at lights, and even then she had to alternate between feet...and she has a 35" inside leg), however a quick visit to a custom shop to scollop the seat out a bit cured that.

As I said earlier, they ain't particularly me...but I'm still thinking about having one just for those days where I don't feel like reaching 150 in 9 seconds flat off the line.

About the only downside I can see to the Guzzi is the price, even multi-owner secondhand ones on a Y plate will set you back £3K with ease.

Do remember the prerequisite for being a harley owner in the UK, you must have grey hair and be over 65 years of age to ride a harley here. Sorry but harleys image in the uk is hardly one of rebellion, more mid-life crisis  ;D or where the heck did my life go.......

I no 3 people who have gone down the harley route, and yes you guessed it, they do meet the rquirements above.

Dunno about that, but I do know they come with heated grips as standard so your fingers don't get cold when you are pushing them home.

Harley-Davidson: The most efficient way to convert petrol into noise without the adverse side effect of horsepower.

Did you know 95% of all Harleys are still on the road?
The other 5% actually made it home.

Is it true that Harleys are pussy magnets?
Yes, but only if the pussy has a steel plate in her head.

What's the cheapest way to get another 50 BHP from your Harley?
Trade it in on a Kawasaki.

Why don't Harley riders sit on their bikes when the sidestands are down?
They're afraid to lean over that far

How do Harley engineers tell if a bike is worthy of the Harley name?
They check to make sure the exhaust noise in decibels exceeds the horsepower rating.

Why don't Harley owners smile?
Once you realized you got conned into paying £15,000 for an outdated piece of s**t, would YOU be smiling?
