Website design / hosting
« on: 16 September 2009, 13:13:24 »

A small charity has asked me to 'do' a website.

No idea what they actually want yet, but suspect 3-4 page site with very rare updates.
ie :
Home page / about ut
Contact
Upcoming Events
Gallery
No forum or email likely to be needed, just an online presence.

Never done any web work, never needed to.

Looks to be, buy a name (£5 a year), and hosting (£2+ a month)

design, upload & jobs a goodun.

have access to various bits of web design software, so that's not a problem.

That sound about right?  any hosting companies recommended / to avoid?

any other advice?

.uk names are around £3 + VAT per year, minimum 2yr registration.  .com is around £8 per year or $8 per year if you use US sites.

All exc taxes.

Most hosting companies will give you free domain with web package.  If its a simple, non dynamic site, shared hosting is fine - though uptime might struggle to be top-notch.

US hosting does tend to offer greater value for money, but UK ones aren't too bad for smaller, less busy sites.

Personally, I'd avoid ServerCentre (previously Hosting Unlimited), as early OOF adopters will remember those useless cowboys.  1&1 is one I've had trouble with in the distant past, though that was due to some special requirements that they couldn't accomodate, so wouldn't write them off.

Key thing is to ensure the domain is in your name, so you can move to another provider if your choice is unsuitable....

ISP own hosting suitable, possibly using one of those gay 'cloaking' URLs? Would save on the hosting costs ;)

I've used them for the last 4 years +

Never had to call them, and my site has never been down.

Start asking the likes of 1&1 to include everything Krystal give you as standard, and it will end up costing you 3 times what Krystal charge with ease.

PS
I don't get any favours or discounts for recommending them, I'm recommending them because the service is flawless.

Depends what you want on the site.

Dreamweaver will probably be a bit of a learning curve for you (as well as knocking a £200 hole in the coffers), but once you know how to use it then you'll be cooking on gas.
