...I thought I'd save Bannjaax and Optimist the bother of stating that.  ;) ;)

For others, what do you make of this?

"Reds under the beds?" Although a hackneyed expression, it would seem to describe the situation back then quite well.  :o

Wilson and Foot ....were unashamed old style socialists......from the sixties.....seventies ...and eighties......so it is unsurprising....that they had regular contact with the USSR .....during the Leonid Brezhnev era.....
However.....as usual .....Nickbat has gone into the "concealed conspiracy mode"....along with the obviously biased right wing rantings of the Daily Mail.. ;)
So...in summary......yes The Wilson government of the sixties and seventies ....did speak with (those nasty evil communists.....who eat their own children ::) ::))........but the idea that the British government......of the time was full of "commies"....is laughable.... :) :) ;)

But it is known that MI5 was "monitoring" Wilson & Co!! :D :D ;) ;)

I think my cat is the only thing that hasn't been monitored by M.I.5
Come to think of it ...... she has been microchipped ;D

I agree completely Ms Zoom, there's something more tangible about history when previously unreleased documents are available for examination 8-)

Sometimes I get really annoyed with the drivel and nastiness that is aimed at me.

Anatoly Chernyaev wrote these diaries. If you think he is a right-wing ranter, that's fine by me. The Daily Mail may well have a chequered history, but what they report here is Chernyaev's diaries, which are either true or not.

Besides which, perhaps Optimist et al need to read my posts more carefully. I posted the story because it was interesting and just requested people's views. I have no idea what "concealed conspiracy mode" is but I take as a personal slur, as though my views and my posts are to be regarded as those of a nutter.

I am honestly beginning to wonder why I bother posting at all, when all I seem to get is ad hominem comments and wild attacks on any views which may be considered to the political right, even if slightly.

Keep them coming Nick, some of us are proud to have not been brainwashed by "the new wisdom" which is printed in scummy rags such as The Guardian. :y :y

Agreed ......Lizzie......But I believe that MI5.....monitoring back in those days was pretty wide spread.....
Any peace protester.....hippy....or.......just about anybody  who did not quite fit in.......more than likely MI5 had a file on them.... :y :y :y :y

Nickbat.....most of your postings ....seem to be angry......full of angst.....In no way................. am I ever unpleasant towards you...although you are often "irritated"...sometimes even hostile..........to both mine and Banjaxx's views......as we dare to disagree with you....
I would say.....lighten up.......and enjoy the banter.....and try not to take things so..... personally.....and oh yes......use more smilies..... :) :) :) :) ;) ;)
OOF...... need informed postings .......such as yours .....even though we often disagree. :y :y

I was not in the best of moods this morning, although that had nothing to do with OOF/politics/climate or similar. I don't regret my caustic comments but, in hindsight, maybe I should have kept quiet for the sake of the forum. :-[

I often post light-hearted topics as well as the politics/climate bit, but yes I fully accept that I do get angry and sometimes angst-ridden when I feel that those in power act dishonourably, selfishly or stupidly.

I want a great future for my children. More than anything else, I want them to live in a free and fair society. When I see come of the plans being put in place by the political elite - many of whom have been proven to be, at best, less than totally righteous - it does make me cross and, yes, worried. :(

Perhaps it's not good to get cross and worried. Maybe it's best to just sit back and let them get on with it. But that's not me, I'm afraid. Actually, I wish that more people in the UK would get cross. It's the political indifference that may ultimately cost us our freedom.

I am not a conspiracy theorist (which these days means support for a fringe theory), but society is full of lesser conspiracies - in the basic meaning of a secret plans - from Whitehall to the school playground.

Thanks to those who have posted kind comments.
 :y :) :)
