...I thought I'd save Bannjaax and Optimist the bother of stating that.  ;) ;)

For others, what do you make of this?

"Reds under the beds?" Although a hackneyed expression, it would seem to describe the situation back then quite well.  :o

are they comparing Michael Foot to Kim Philby? And  Kinnock?and several other trade unions to boot??
key words in this article  seem to be "tantalising slivers of information".
Although i noticed that milliband has familly in ussr that he never declared.(nuther story)
Does this not sound like the usual Putin style of propoganda? And perhaps trying to distract from the murder of Alexander Litvenenko?
Lets face it who can trust a Kremlin insider or outsider?

Got to be honest, I don't know. Although the diaries involved are years old and pre-date the Putin era.  :-/

Wilson and Foot ....were unashamed old style socialists......from the sixties.....seventies ...and eighties......so it is unsurprising....that they had regular contact with the USSR .....during the Leonid Brezhnev era.....
However.....as usual .....Nickbat has gone into the "concealed conspiracy mode"....along with the obviously biased right wing rantings of the Daily Mail.. ;)
So...in summary......yes The Wilson government of the sixties and seventies ....did speak with (those nasty evil communists.....who eat their own children ::) ::))........but the idea that the British government......of the time was full of "commies"....is laughable.... :) :) ;)

Sometimes I get really annoyed with the drivel and nastiness that is aimed at me.

Anatoly Chernyaev wrote these diaries. If you think he is a right-wing ranter, that's fine by me. The Daily Mail may well have a chequered history, but what they report here is Chernyaev's diaries, which are either true or not.

Besides which, perhaps Optimist et al need to read my posts more carefully. I posted the story because it was interesting and just requested people's views. I have no idea what "concealed conspiracy mode" is but I take as a personal slur, as though my views and my posts are to be regarded as those of a nutter.

I am honestly beginning to wonder why I bother posting at all, when all I seem to get is ad hominem comments and wild attacks on any views which may be considered to the political right, even if slightly.

I'm in complete agreement with you Nick and have mentioned this inappropriate use of the language on numerous occasions - it simply devalues the validity or otherwise of any point being made.

From my corner of the room, I consider your threads to be informed, interesting, thought-provoking and conscience-raising and would consider this forum to be the poorer without them.

Whoa!  We all have freedom of speech (so far). Nick's postings are, for me, thought provoking and interesting.  The rebuttals add to the thought processes.

We are all grown ups and the differing thoughts and opinions make the world the interesting (if sometimes frustrating) place it is.

I am afraid that my comments on some of these political / conservation / climate threads are generally somewhat childish as a) it goes over my head, b) I have little of any import to say generally, and c) I try to lighten the mood a bit.

Keep posting, Nick. It keeps us thinking  :y
