Zulu............I was thinking along the lines of "the good ol boys".....who live in the mountains of Virginia.....or Tennessee.......who hates federal government....and who has a wife ......that is also his sister...... ::) ::) ;)

I do take your point Opti, aside from that, the problem with armed militias in the US has always held the potential for tragedy and with Barak Obama as CiC I can foresee a hardening of attitudes within such organisations.

The availability of firearms to these groups should not be encouraged however my point, in terms of general crime, remains.

Is it just me that is disturbed that a psychiatrist can go nuts and kill a load of people

If you were about to be deployed to Iraq, wouldn't you? I would!

Lol, would like to think that a psychiatrist could recognise the signs.

Twelve people have been killed and 31 injured in a shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.

"There are unconfirmed reports that Major Hasan was a convert to Islam and originally from Virginia. He was reportedly scheduled to deploy to either Iraq or Afghanistan and was unhappy about it.

It goes without saying that the fact that the shooter was a Muslim will turn this into a gigantic story."

Very serious indeed  :( :(

Disregarding the muslim element of this thread....

Gun law  in the U.S........is incredibly lax....previous Republican administrations........who are paid large amounts of money .....by the all powerful gun lobby (especially the NRA).....have seen to that. :-/ :-/ ;)

Whether it is lax or not has approximately the square root of bugger all to do with the incident.  Shooter was a member of the military and, as others have said, soldiers routinely carry firearms as part of their daily business, as do others in firearms tight countries such as Japan.  The US constitution has hee haw to do with it.

As per Zulu, I have carried and deployed with assorted firearms over the years varying from close protection weapons to long way away widow makers and all points inbetween.  Also an active shooter in my personal time.

Shooter involved will no doubt be subject to comprehensive scrutiny, as will any and all members of the military, in the US and elsewhere.  Just shows how extreme and controvertial the battle currently ongoing is.....

It has been reported that this major, along with other soldiers on the base do NOT routinely carry army weapons.  The major in question is believed to have used his privately owned automatic pistol, with numerous clips of bullets being used, to shoot his comrades.

Therefore the American gun laws certainly DO come into this matter. ;) ;)

Well, I am pretty sure that, even if he did use a privately-owned weapon, he would have had little difficulty in getting hold of an army weapon if required. That aside, I believe that the gun law issue is a sideshow in this case. It was clear that the shooter was acting in a premeditated way and gun laws, no matter how tight, cannot prevent someone determined to carry out such an attack from obtaining one. The real issue for me, especially after the Afghan attack on UK solidiers earlier this week, is how can any organisation (Afghan Army, US Army) weed out those who would cause harm. Distrust within service ranks is a most serious issue, IMHO. That, to me, is the crux of the matter. :-/ :-/

The irony, of course, is that even with our tight gun laws this doesn't even make the headlines:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8348152.stm

"A post-mortem test gave the cause of death as a gunshot to the chest."
