US shootings
« on: 05 November 2009, 23:12:10 »

Twelve people have been killed and 31 injured in a shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.

"There are unconfirmed reports that Major Hasan was a convert to Islam and originally from Virginia. He was reportedly scheduled to deploy to either Iraq or Afghanistan and was unhappy about it.

It goes without saying that the fact that the shooter was a Muslim will turn this into a gigantic story."

Has the potential for causing real problems - not only in the obvious sense.

my initial estimations is that the story behind is deeper and complicated than the visible now.. :(

but whatever the reason is nothing gives someone to shot randomly and kill many people.. >:( >:(

or may be its simply a case of psychopathy.. :(

Jeez, that must be the winner in the most convoluted attack on those oh-so-horrible-in the pay-of-big-business-republicans and NRA I have ever seen.

Hallo? The shooter was in the military and the shooting took place in a military establishment. Soldiers routinley carry weapons even in countries where gun laws are tight.

Gun laws have NOTHING to do with this tragedy at all.

The original post was about the shooting in Fort Hood, which has NOTHING to do with the US gun laws.

I have to say that the correlation between firearms and the level of violent crime can be somewhat exaggerated Opti - especially when referring to that experienced in the US.

Crime, especially violent crime, will always be committed irrespective of the ready availability of firearms.  You need only look to the problem with knife crime we have here at the moment, the number of people kicked with feet and assaulted with any object that can be used as a weapon.

It's fashionable in some quarters to bash groups such as the NRA but that simply panders to popular prejudice.

I have carried firearms for most of my adult life and besides being quite comfortable with the fact, I haven't posed a danger to any member of the public - except those whose actions demanded my attention of course.

In the end it needs to be acknowledged that people will always kill other people irrespective of the weapon used.

...thank you for you confidence Opti.

I would reiterate that violent crime will always be committed whether firearms are involved or not – however - I do agree that the availability to the general populace of long weapons, such as assault rifles and so on simply invites trouble.
