Short duration car insurance
« on: 27 April 2010, 09:26:41 »

I am looking to buy another petrol Omega Elite from the UK as a source of parts to keep mine running.

One practicality is getting the thing back here. Is it possible nowadays to buy a week or a months worth of insurance say TPFT with foreign country use? I would use a UK relatives address.

Any suggestions?

Before I got my traders policy I used to get a days insurance from here

http://www.aviva.co.uk/short-term-car-insurance/

A day used to be about £17 but a month is quite expensive :(

Tried both to get a quote (using my former Uk reg on current car). Both declined as the car was over 10 years old! It is a pre facelift I am after.

Is there still a heavy redemption fee for cashing in a years insurance after say a week or two?

Typically insurance companies will charge you a £42 cancellation fee. Or at least it's either that or £47.
Can you not add an extra car to your policy for a short term period?
In the UK, I can help out, if it's not taxed we can use my trade plates and my trade insurance covers me to drive anything. When you get to the train or port or however you're taking the vehicle, that'd be it unfortunately as my insurance is not valid in europe (I think)

That is called (in law) pecuniary advantage, guess what the benefits are when found guilty  ;)

I've used these people for an 1997 Vectra and there was no restriction query over age of the vehicle.
Whether they do EU insurance I don't know but as mentioned by one of the others it's not a cheap option!

Varche, it may be possible for Omegatoy and I to collaborate. If it's going to be a vehicle you're using for parts, it may not have tax on it. I can use my trade plates and I have motor trade insurance to get the vehicle to Omegatoy. For example, if he's going to take it back via train...or drive it all the way etc I can bring it from wherever it is to him.
I suspect once it's out of the UK, tax is no issue it'll only be insurance. So I can only help in the UK, or at least getting the vehicle to a port, train etc.
But that still leaves you with the dilemna of eu insurance.

Of course people stretch the truth every now & again, that is human nature.

The main problem for the OP in getting insurance over here is that he does not live in the UK and that can be easily proved.

Any car driven in any country has to be fully legal in it's country of registration, so for the OP to drive it back home he will need a full license that is considered valid in the UK, 3rd party insurance (minimum), MOT, and Tax.

I got a car home last year by buying an HPI Check and using their free 7-day insurance.  It's run by Aviva as a way to send you a renewal quote and frankly is good value, fully legal and moral for about £20.   :y
