I actually agree with a small fee if you intend to sell, a fiver a year to become an 'Elite' member. That will put off the 'new sellers'

Make the 'Elite' membership totally optional, that way if you dont want to pay the fiver then you don't have to and you can still have full use of the forum, just can't sell owt......

If someone is selling a few parts or a complete car, whats a fiver? got to pay to advertise elswhere anyway haven't we?
That leads to a two tiered system, automatically that makes Member A seemingly more important than Member B, just because Member A can afford (or is prepared) to pay.

That goes beyond the philosophy of OOF, where everybody has the same access to all the information for free, and everybody is equal - within the (unfortunate) necessary confines needed to protect members to a certain extent.

Sorry TB, I dont follow that at all.  The £5 would be so members can post in the 'For Sale' section.  Unpaid members would still have full access and posting abilities in every other area of the site (except the admin/mod areas of course).

Lets be completely honest, if you have Omega Parts, this IS the only place to sell it.  If you have an Omega for sale, this is the place to trial an advert..... you'll get more than a fivers worth of advice on the advert alone before you go pay 723894237856 pounds to bang it in Auto Trader!
So it becomes a community were some people can buy their way to some kind of superiority (as in being able to post in for sale sections)?

Whats wrong with the current system? OK, its not perfect, but far more perfect than allowing a stranger come in, pay a fiver, put up ads, never post anything out, and run off into the sunset....

IMHO, allowing ads is done as a service to our loyal members who keep OOF alive and vibrant.  There are plenty of other sites and publications for those who simply want to sell their leftovers...

Agreed... If Sales became a "charged" service there would be even less protection than now. At least with a Post count the person selling has to have been around for a while and contributing :y :y

The key thing some are missing is that OOF's primary purpose is to support Omega owners with free advice and help.

Hopefully, in addition to this, it should be a reasonable place for general chat and banter.

Its not intended to be a sales site.

I should also add that only the admins and moderators can truly appreciate the hassle and overhead created by the sales sections.

Hence the post count limit, its not up for discussion (we as an admin team have tried all mentioned approaches already and discussed things for a VERY long time) and wont be altered in the near future.

Sorry to add to this, I would personally think that time of membership could be a factor. I'm saying this as a member of 3 years+ with a low post count, I'm a genuine member who gets on here a few times a month and try my best to post if I have something useful to add, and keep schtum if I don't.
But I respect that the mods / admins have made their decision - and the reasons for that, in particular that this should be a free site, which I have benefited from enormously.
The reason I'm posting is that I had a couple of posts removed from the help section, basically someone was having a problem with headlight washers and I said I have a surplus pump if interested, and a similar one for fog lights IIRC.
I never saw the post(s) appear on the thread so I assume it was removed..it was a genuine attempt to help someone out and perhaps recover a few quid from a bumper I had to buy to replace one which was damaged by a heavy handed parker in a car park this summer.
But I appreciate why the post was removed, from one perspective I was touting.
On the other hand I can no longer post replies in for sale and wanted which is a pain if I ever need anything.
Maybe open forum is the wrong place to discuss this, but I don't know who removed my post and there was no pm about this so I let it lie up until I saw this thread which struck a chord...
Is there a mod who can help me?

rule breaking ad's are normally deleted without explanation...the overhead for that is huge.

You can place wanetd ad's in the test zone and they will be moved  :y

Fair enough Jimbob - I don't have a problem whatever with that, but I can't Reply to topics in parts for sale - any chance this could be reviewed?

There is nothing stopping you sending a PM to the person asking for parts.  :y

That is part of the recent chances.

Basically, what was happening before, some people without enough posts were replying on other people's threads to get around postcount limits.  So we had little choice but to say only the OP and those with sufficient posts can reply to any threads in these section.  This means that if a low postcount member makes a Wanted post in test, once it's moved to the For Sale section, they can still reply to their own thread.

Draconian? Yup. But a few (as in lots!) individuals have taken the pee and ruined it for everyone.

The rules we implement have to be enforcible by the forum software, which currently rules out any calculations on length of membership.
