Stupid misguided moronic so called Irish Americans(mainly in the NYC and Boston areas) provided much of the funding for the IRA. Unprincipled opportunist politicians who relied on the Votes of such people also voiced their support, but the U.S. state never sponsored the IRA. ;)

You are of course right Albs. My issue is the states never did anything to stop it.

Most of the leaks so far have been little more than tittle-tattle with only a small number standing out and thus being mentioned widely.

Personally I'm uncomfortable with this caper.  As much as I find it distasteful that countries can behave in such a janus-faced manner I fear for the safety of people whose identities will inevitably be uncovered where they have already put themselves at risk in order to prevent mendacious activities by rogue states and individuals.  The stance that names have been removed so their identities are protected is very poor as they are often identified through descriptions, locations and dates, meaning they are soon narrowed down.  Overal I think it's misguided and the potential cost is not worth it.

It is an historical fact that much of what is said in 'secret diplomacy' is actually known by those being talked about.  However they usually do not have any real confirmation of it and they are kept guessing.

This type of leakage is a "poor show"and not in the spirit of the game which diplomacy is! It's not done old chap, and not the act of gentlemen (or woman)!

The serious side is that if a nation cannot hold its secrets and future intentions, then it can pose a real threat to all.

I can think of occasions though in history when the diplomatic "truth" would have saved much future heartache and human suffering.  That is the flip side ;) ;)

Indeed they do Cem, and thank God much of it will be kept highly classified for some decades to come or it could, even now, cause severe embarrassment! ;) ;)

Anyone who distributes material like this which puts soldiers' lives at risk of retaliation attacks or by having their security weaknesses exposed to the masses, all in the fickle pursuit of notiriety, exposure and a higher reader distribution, deserve to die slowly an agonising death several times over

I can't believe the lack of security if reports are true the man that obtained the files did so by inserting a blank disc in the computer and pretended that it was music and even sang along as he downloaded the files :o
