Computer help Please - System file missing.
« on: 16 February 2011, 10:51:23 »

My girlfriends PC hung last night whilst installing some Samsung phone software (The disk that came with the Tocco lite to sync it with the computer.)

Tried a 2nd time and it seemed to work, then had to reboot and got following error message on screen.

WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING WAS MISSING OR CORRUPT.

<WINDOWS ROOT>\SYSTEM32\HAL.DLL

PLEASE INSTALL A COPY OF THE ABOVE FILE

Now is this a windows or a samung file, and how would I/we go about putting the problem right.  #

Thankyou  :y

Do a System Restore to the nearest point before the phone software install :y

You haven't left the software CD in the drive by any chance?  Could be trying to boot from it?

Check your boot order in the BIOS to ensure it's using HDD to boot from first.

If really lost or missing HALL.DLL then use XP install disc to replace system files.

Could be trying to boot from it? Removed it

Check your boot order in the BIOS to ensure it's using HDD to boot from first. Tried that as well

If really lost or missing HALL.DLL then use XP install disc to replace system files. Looks like being the final option, but bit reluctant to do so at this point as she needs to retrieve some info from an MSM chat history file. (Unless the drive can be slaved and wecan locate and read where the chat history is stored)

I would hardly classify an MSM chat history file as a system file.

There should be a Recover option when doing an install that allows just System Files to be replaced.  You might have to re-patch afterwards to get back to current (in)security levels.

Been having a play and try as I might I hoped to get to the root DIR with the view just to copy the missing .DLL file across from another hard disk.  This idea failed in the fact that as soon as I pressed a key to try anything the PC just rebooted.

Tried a windows CD, but the repair option hasn't come up so am starting to bang my head against a brick wall  :-/

You might have to press F8 early in the boot process to get the Windows CD to offer Restore options.

Have you tried booting the puter into Safe Mode?

to boot into Safe Mode. :)
