I've had a 19 inch Technika Freeview/DVD jobbie as a bedroom telly for 2 or 3 years. It's fine, cost just over £100 from Tesco. Why spend thousands on what is just a telly?

last one I am comparing was the other way round..

Went round to father in laws house, cos he couldnt get a decent picture.
eventually managed a reasonable one, but only on one of the inputs, he could have scart, ot dtv tuner looking ok, not both!
cost him £160.
I too was in the market for the same 19" with built in dvd.
I got a FAR FAR better Hitachi set from argos, for £10 cheaper!

So yes, I wouldnt may thousands for a better set, but £20-30 for a better picture over the years of month is nothing in my mind, and even better when the better ones are cheaper too!

The other one I used was a bigger set for the woman across the road.
I dunno what she did at it, but it would not remember the input it was set at after being switched off for some time - a pain when it defaults to analogue tuner when it had already been switched off here.  Picture was ok at best, sound was dreadful.

I will not ever buy a technica telly after these experiences, even for a kids bedroom.

May well be they are made by the cheapest bidder at the time, so quality may vary massively from one batch to the next, but not worth the risk imho, when you can get better sets at around the same money if you shop around a bit and bide your time.


Ohhh, and our main telly is a 32" Sony I got from the local freecycle!  which we prefer the pic on to most the flat jobbies.  resisting one of those for the main telly as long as possible

I paid £170 for LCD 20" with built in DVD.  Got what I expected, reasonable picture for a bedroom set. I can hear the DVD spinning when watching a film, quite annoying but on the whole, I'm pleased for what I paid. I also know if it broke in the first 12 months, I wouldn't have to deal with Currys or Comet who are a pain when things go wrong!

Had a 19" jobbie a few years back and wasnt impressed either. not very user friendly. For another £30 -£50 can get a good brand name.

i'd be very impressed.

does jobbie mean the same down south as it does up here?

Depends what you want from a TV, really, doesn't it.. If you just want some flashing colours and noise, buy the cheapest you can - if you want films to look remotely like they were intended to, you need to spend a bit more.

Personally I wouldn't think twice about spending £1500 or so on a decent large plasma (no, I don't want to have the plasma vs. LED argument again ) - heck, I was pondering spending £3300 on a 65" Plasma just to gain 15" and better VQ over my current 50" LG.. (then I spent the money on engine bits instead)

Yep, exactly the same boat as we are in.

Have a 10 year old 32FX60 that has a great picture and really can't abide the current LCDs, especially on low def material, which is what we'd be watching 99% of the time.

As a radio amateur, I don't want a noisy plasma anywhere near me let alone in the same house.

Now the 3D hysteria is in full flow I guess TV manufacturers won't be upping their low def picture quality any time soon.

I am sure it is flat screened but rather thick

We used to have an FD Trinitron TV but wanted to go HD.

This was when it was easy to buy, for mixed sources the W series Sonys were a good bet between quality features and price.

Now I would have no idea.

I'm a I was G8 something or other, must look it up for old times sake. Only really did it due to peer pressure - worked for Pye in Cambridge at the time and most of the engineers there were keen.

Depends what you want from a TV, really, doesn't it.. If you just want some flashing colours and noise, buy the cheapest you can - if you want films to look remotely like they were intended to, you need to spend a bit more.

I Guess so. I'm just not a big lover of telly or movies. Lodger Steve moved out a year or so ago with one of his squeezes so i put the living room telly in the spare room & thre jukebox in it's place...yeah, no telly downstairs. 8-) Within a month he moved back so the telly's back too cos he watches it, his rent helps so fair go....when it packs up though i won't replace it.

  I 'm happy to lay in bed & watch my £100 Tesco special & would happily live with no telly in the living room. As for telly's hanging off the wall, some friends have them but it's just a bit too much for me to even look at...i find it vulgar... & what else i could do with the money..

   That said if you & your family use & enjoy it then why not? We all have our indulgences. Guy.

I have a 19" one for the bedroom, had it over 3 years now, its moved house with us, gets used every other day and is still fine.

My Samsung 42" lasted 15 Months, and the colour in the screen went. Samsung replaced it as a "Goodwill" gesture.
