New Windscreen
« on: 28 December 2006, 07:26:31 »

Hi

Did you all have a good un?New years upon us!

Anyway, I need some advice, i need a new windscreen for my 1994 omega (no aircon) ive had some quotes so far.....Autoglass £419, RAC £297, 24 National Hour £117 (all incl. fiiting and vat) why is there such a difference in price?!obviously i would take the cheaper quote but im in two minds what to do, will i be getting the same level of workmanship? one company said that i would need 3 new strips, what are these strips? Is there anyone had a windscreen lately that could recomend one to me? im in leicester.
Please help ::)

Thanks Lee

Do you have fully comp insurance?
If so most do a replacement windscreen for £50-60 quid!
may be worth checking your policy.

If not, why do you need a new screen, chipped, smashed, or just tatty?
if you can live with it for a bit, change your insurance, wait a week or 2, then off to autoglass for a new screen through the insurance.
FYI, this is an undeclareable claim, ie will not affect no claims, or premium.

FYI, when we got the wife's omega, it had an RAC screen in it, poor quality, it smashed, by itself, just sat on the drive one hot day.  The replacement autoglass one is much better.

you may also find that fully comp is cheaper than TPF&T - I did on renewing my insurancy

Just be aware that if you need to cancel the policy (for example because you wish to add another driver that your current insurer will not cover - say a learner) then the windscreen will count as a claim and they may not refund the 'unused' premium

I'm also in the market for a new windscreen as mine has started to crack from the A pillar for no apparent reason so it would be good to hear how you get on

Mine's an RAC screen & agree about the quality. I could do with a 'stone chip'

It was going to get an 'artificial' stone chip, but decided to commit suicide instead!

That won't be a stone chip, the whole windscreen will shatter

Whilst I'm sure many of us do it, we really shouldn't be seen publically discussing what could be seen as insurance fraud.
