I get 3 or 4 spam emails a day saying buy shares in this or that company, they're about to rocket, hhhmmm  :-/

Those are "pump n dump" scams... basically the scammers buy stock in what's usually quite a small company (penny stocks) as their price is much easier to manipulate. Once the e-mails go out people speculate that the interest generated will drive the price up (and if you check it out it probably has gone up, as both the scammers and early receivers have bought in). At that time the scammers dump their stock, reap the profits, and cause the price to crash. Usually by the time you receive the e-mail it will already have peaked so the chances of making anything are very slim -- most likely you'll make a sizeable loss.

It's very unfortunate for the company involved, as they usually have nothing to do with it, and it can leave them seriously devalued.

Never played the stock market  - however last year I did make £550 playing roulette at an online casino!

Never played again after that, as I didn't think I'd ever be that lucky again...  :-/

Glad youmade some cash Markie but the best buy yesterday was Alliance & Leicester - share price dropped on the back of NRock and rose again today by 30%.

If only we had a rewind time button

Folks, Seriously , dont go following me if your unsure....my academic background helps me here as i spend a few years studying this and spend 6 years with HBOS. I am by no means an expert but have been playing for 8 - 9 years on and of.

My secret - not really a secret i guess - is i am now not using my own money...."profits" i have are used to buy, so if it all goes Wall Street Crash wrong then the money i have lost is actually only my winnings...

Does that make sense..  :-/

My one and only tip is to decide how much profit you want, and put a limit on to sell when it reaches the mark.  If you wait for the extra £10 - you'll invariably lose.

The best deal I had was less than 48 hours for a £500 profit  

The worst was £1k invested in a pharmaceutical company that was tipped to have a major breakthrough and would make me a mint....it didn't get the licence, shares fell, took over by a US comany, shares registered on the Dow Jones, lost all value and I had to pay £50 to get rid  

But if you want big returns you have to gamble, if not you should invest your cash in a bank bond and let someonelse do it for you

Just what my mate does in the bookies. He has a small bet, if it wins he pockets the notes then plays on with the change. When the change has gone he walks sounds like a good plan to me.

I started back in the heady early 80's when all the privatisations were going on. At the time I worked for BT and I was so convinced that the privatisation would go well that we borrowed money to buy. A few weeks later they were sold at a good profit and we bought a secondhand 4.2 daimler Xj6 with the proceeeds.

I would agree with the contributor who said only gamble with cash you can afford to lose completely. A good fun, low cost way into the world of stocks and shares is to join a share syndicate. Choose one with like minded people and one that is well run - with monthly statements, properly elected officials, meetings and has a constitution. I have been in two in the last 25 years. Each month you contribute an agreed amount say £40. With say 10 members you can make a purchase of say £700 of shares every other month. We looked to buy two types.

1. Stock for short term gain ( e.g. Northern Rock )

2. Stock for long term gain ( as well as regular dividends, share price increase)

When you take into account dealing costs to buy and sell the share price has to go up quite a lot to make a profit unless you are buying a lot!

Either through share syndicates or private purchases I have "owned " shares in at least 50 outfits.
 
Overall I made money. Some spectacular successes.

Only use money you can afford to lose or be prepared to tie it up
Stick with the market you know.
Avoid penny shares.
Monitor your portfolio very regularly
Buy Tesco shares to hold (everybody needs to eat and they have great expansion plans).

The answer is now obvious....but anyone know the biggest land owner in uk....

And anyone want to speculate as to why. Tesco seems good long term

I think you have to actively monitor stocks, not just put them in the drawer and wait for a rainy day. I had several £K of British Energy stock, they seem to be good (everyone needs energy, right?), and were paying a good return. However the Acountants running the company screwed up, and somehow the major stock holders took control, and I got about £50 back. Once bitten........
