Anyone Play the Stockmarket?
« on: 18 September 2007, 18:21:35 »

Or is it just me  :-/ Lots of fun, and less of a guess than the lottery..

Just made - or will tomorrow first thing - a tidy sum buying and selling online in shares of a certain troubled bank...nice little earner  ;)

Not that i prey on the weak  ;D

ps - i do mean the stockmarket and not some online fantasy site  :o

Something I've considered doing but not had the confidence to start. Any tips for the beginner would be appreciated Markie.

I go for bankers...go for an area or industry you are strong in. For me thats financial companies.

Look for big brand names and for just playing about buy and sell quick, dont keep shares long term if your having a bit of fun.

Example - we all know whats happening re northern rock, shares took a massive crash, panic ensues and the markets flooded with shares ( people want rid of them) supply far outweight demand. Therefore buying price is low.

Any troubled company hits rock bottom - be there to pick them up when they do. I bought NR shares yesterday lunchtime after the initial monday morning blip and as the share price gradually levelled out.

Rest of yesterday and today has seen the price of each share rise about 45p since i bought them. Near £200 profit. Yes they will continue to go up but they have made me my money and i am happy.

Another example - if you know a company is doing well annually and they are about to announce yearly profits - buying in them before the good news comes out can be profitable. Markets always react well to good company accounts :y

Of course shares can go up as well as down and theres a huge amount of speculation involved.

Try buying a few shares in a few well known companies - literally a few shares! and watch as the price goes up and down as they react to market news.

I've played the stockmarket for around 9yrs now.

You really need the ability to go 'Short', not just 'Long'
as with normal Stockbrokers. So that means using
CFD's or Spreadbets.

The advantage with Spreadbets is that you are not liable
for Capital Gains Tax, and you don't pay Commissions
to the Stockbrokers.

Have a read of this site.

http://www.capitalspreads.com/public/

Find out how it all works, and open a Demo account and practise
with it. It's free to open the Demo account, and they give you a
'Pretend' £10,000 to practise with and learn how it all works.

Post up any questions you have, and if I'm online I'll answer them.
I treat this as a very interesting hobby that actually makes me money,
and you can't say that about many hobbies  :)

DO NOT go barging in with loads of real money until you know
what you are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're playing with sharks here and you will get eaten alive.
Approx 90% of short term traders lose their money.

Then, seriously, leave it well alone until you do know.
Otherwise all you'll do is feed the market your money.

Me too, think I need to do a lot of reading before I jump though.
Thanks for the info guys, still wondering about selling the gas shares I inherited years ago. My mum had them since the day of Sid's sell off.

I was thinking exactly the same thing -- with such a kneejerk reaction by the public it was likely to rebound. Unfortunately I don't have access to an instant buy/sell facility required to take advantage of these kind of conditions.
