May i hijack the thread a second,

What would be the benefit of changing the ATF in my auto if it hasnt been done in 12 years?

Will i notice anything smoother?

Carrying on the hijack .. :)

My reasons for doing the partial change/filter change are quite simple ....

Although VX say the box is filled for life, the ATF acts as a lubricant, it collects any dirt/wear particles, it is subject to quite severe temperature changes, and it is never "checked"

As I believe that oil changes are the best "maintenance" an engine can ever get.. the same logic applies to the gearbox .. a little "preventative maintenance" now may ... just may ...  give it a longer and "happier" life. I also don't know what previous owners have done with the car.

For the overall cost I think it's worth it, so it gets done around 75,000 miles

end of hijack continuance

Well I noticed the difference on my 5 year old car with 63K on it, the gearchanges were far smoother.  :y

Very hard to change much more than 6L at a time without disconnecting the cooler and flushing it seperately.

Will probably change it again in about a year and use Fuchs 4000 as recomended here.

I think if you drop BOTH sumps you can change about 7 litres ...  :)

and someone some while back was on about using an airline to blow through the oil cooler lines to get out a few more litres - I won't be trying THAT trick !!  :)

Used instant gasket on the sumps and cleaned the filter.

Fill till it flows out level plug,
Select all gears for a few seconds with car stationary
Refil again, with engine running till it flows out the level plug.

Secure plug, go for a drive,

Then recheck level, again on the flat with engine running, top up each time till fluid escapes.

As Above^^^^^^^

But when the engine is running i also go throught the gears too!

Make sure you have a spill pot under the sump when your filling up as it over flows quite quick and you dont want oil every where! :)
