Manual gearbox oil flush
« on: 23 July 2008, 14:50:08 »

Did an oil and filter change on the omega yesterday and while i was under the car thought i'd have a look at the gearbox to see how easy it was to top up the oil (gearbox has always been a bit clunky) especially getting reverse when car has been standing all night.

Noticed that apart from the Filler/level plug half way up there is also an identical looking plug at the bottom of the gearbox right at the back. (Is this a drain plug?) Thought modern day box's only had filler/level plugs! Ask a VX stealer and you get (sealed for life mate-never have to touch em)
What oil should i use to fill/flush and if it is a drain plug how much do i need to use to replace it all

Thanks  Mark
P.S Got to get to work so wont be back online till tomorrow afternoon

It is a drain plug and the oil is a synthetic hypoid......email opieoils for the recommended stuff.

It only holds just over a litre.

Thanks guys that was quick. Mark did you manage to sort me out that clutch pedal switch to complete my retro fit cruise control.
How's the packing going? :)

I know you asked Mark but I thought I'd add to his comments.  I did mine at a little over 50k and it was well worth it, certaily reduced the clunkiness quite a bit.  Well worth it in my view

Hope he gets well soon Mark. There is no rush on the switch.
Thanks for the info and advice the other week while you were Tech 2ing my car. Sorted that bent pulley out and gave the breathers (and plenum inc the intake flaps) a damn good clean. Car runs like a dream now. Just got to sort that broken rear coil (speed humps)

Got the oil from VX.  I got 3 litres, enough for a flush and a refil.  Dead easy job all you need is a funnel and a meter of clear plastic pipe.  Jam the pipe in the filler hole, feeding in from the engine bay - pour - check the level with a home made dipstick in the filler hole: welding wire should do it

You have to use a dipstick as mentioned above....only fill to 9mm below the level hole (iirc) any more and you can get gearchange problems.

An allen key makes an ideal dipstick.
