Possibly a dragging clutch ?? or an incorrectly adjusted selector ??

Manual box the fluid is doing nothing when stationary, so I doubt fluid level has much to do with it.

Bleed the hydraulics first.

Mine is doing the same.

I suspect there is a weak / broken spring on the pressure plate

Agree sounds like a weak pressure pate, does it drag when going into reverse.

It wont 'crunch' when selecting reverse as there is a form of synchromesh on reverse.

It sounds like a dragging clutch which could be caused by:
Air in hydraulics
Oil contamination of friction surfaces
Dry grease on input shaft splines
Cracked or broken pressure plate spring

So bleed the hydraulics first ( from bottom up, look at my how-to on auto to manual conversion), everything else requires the gearbox to be removed.

I have similar probs with my car. but not as bad and only when the gearbox is cold. going to do a gearbox flush and oil change soon (when the car gets a day off) just to see if it makes any difference.
Think i'll attempt a full hydraulic flush out (brakes and clutch) Dont fancy dropping the gearbox out unless i have no choice. Had the car for 18 months and the problem has always been there, and it has'nt got any worse

Flush the oil and bleed the hydraulics first, both easy jobs.

If you do have to drop the box, it really is a peice of cake :y
