Gearbox troubles
« on: 20 March 2009, 15:44:48 »

On top of Ljay's droplinks, Dispack, leads and plugs....

My Gearbox is not healthy :(

Car has 127k on it now

Changed the fluid about a year ago, which helped,
It now changes fairly noticably, sometimes with a bit of a clunk.
Often on hills, get Automatic Gearbox message and it drops out.

I can add fluid, but what runs out is very dirty.

I can sometimes top up and get about 1/2 litre in, not all bolts are fully in, so a tiny leak is possible.  When I tried yesterday, it was already full.

I dont know whether to call it a day with this box and keep an eye out for a nice young low miler, and get that fitted,
or whether to drop the small sump in the expectation of a thrust washer and replace that if neccessary (I would need to order more fluid if I try that, havent enough in stock).

Whatever, doing a gearbox myself isnt possible, there is a gearbox centre locally I may try.

Any opinions either way?

Change the fluid again and this time reset the brake band

I had a simialr problem on a Scorpio a few years ago - thought the gearbox was dying but it turned out to be a seal with fluid leaking - is there a pressure test that can be done?

When the sump is removed there is a dome held on with 3 or 4 bolts. Remove it and there is a threaded screw with a lock nut, release it then tighten the screw to 5nm torque, back off five turns and then tighten the lock nut, this sets the brake band. Replace the dome then it`s a gearbox re-fill :)
