Gearbox top up
« on: 08 July 2009, 19:04:43 »

Ok I have read MarkDTM guide to checking and toping up up the gear box oil.
So whats the best way to get the oil in to the box all  I ended up doing was getting oil every where but the gear box  >:(

A length of 1/2"-ish hose pipe that is preferably a 'screw fit' into the side of the gearbox filler hole fed through to the engine bay & a funnel! Just make sure that the hose stays put in the gearbox - that's when I poured ATF over my drive!  :'(  ;D

I bought a length of clear tubing from b&q (about a pound a metre) think it was 8mm size (inner diameter is 8mm anyway).Fitted tight into 1 litre bottle nozzle and good fit into fill hole.(slightly loose so air can get in/out and oil out when at level)I cut off about 35cm of tube so i could get the bottle higher than the gearbox filler hole.Squeeze the bottle and fill without any mess..til it gets to level.(can easily empty the whole bottle too if needed, lower the bottle a bit and let it go back to shape to let air in then raise and squeeze again.)i noticed when it gets to level and starts to come out of fill hole the oil runs down, then along the bottom of the gearbox and drips at the other side.(not directly below the fill hole where i had at first put the container/drip tray.)

A "killaspray" style garden spray (cheapo one from Lidl / Aldi). Take off the spray lance and replace with a bit of 8mm copper pipe bent into a hook at the end. Hook over the filler hole, pump up and open the tap. Sit around drinking tea until it starts overflowing.  :y

I have used kevins "killaspray" solution and it works very well, we filled the gearbox from empty whilst standing around talking.  :y :y :y

LFF64 - I have an already contaminated spray bottle if you want to use that.  Time it right, we can watch Tunnie do it whilst we drink tea made by mother tunnie ;D
