REAR WHEEL BEARINGS.............
« on: 23 July 2009, 07:01:04 »

.....think mine are going, coming back home yesterday afternoon heard a terrible noise coming from the back of the car, as if something was rubbing and about to fall off, checked the wheels, bolts etc, all look fine, so having done a search on here I am assuming the noise is the rear wheel bearings, will pop it into the garage round the corner to double check, and if it is, then pop down to Vx get the bits and hopefully get it fixed ::)

Difficult to say, it could also be the diff that is making the noise... And wheel bearing usually goes on one side at a time. Also, what I have found in my car, is that there is no play in the bearing but the noise is terrible and this is caused by water that has for some reason got inside the bearing.

Repair at VX will probably cost you a fortune but it can also be a pig to do yourself. I must change the other side this summer, other was changed a few years back without any significant problems but having read the worts-case-scenarios here I have my doubts in opening the other side...

Yeah worst case scenario it's the diff, but have'nt heard of anyone's diff going yet on a facelift :-X.....but knowing my luck it probably is, which if it is, then will be an expensive job :-X

Worst case: I mean taking the suspension arm off and put it in a press... I think that if you have oil in diff you should be fine and you can concentrate on the bearing... Does the sound change when turning to either direction?

Not sure, have to take it for a wee drive in a minute and find out.

If the noise is worse when cornering left, and less-so when cornering right, then the left bearing is on it's way out.

One of ours died couple of years ago and my first thoughts were diff -related.
Bearing was £39 from VX IIRC (Autovaux had none in stock).
Had to get a mate to fit, and  he said it was a nightmare! :o

Don't assume anything. Five garages told me I needed a new rear wheel bearing on the Mig.  ;D

Put it on my ramps and moved the exhaust pipe a little. Fixed  ::) 8-) :y
