I have a bit of "knocking" whilst driving, and reckon it MIGHT be the front wishbones. Am told its a common thing, but how do you tell they are fubar???

Is there a "how to...."?

And whilst we are on the subject of "how-to's" is there one for changing the water pump on a V6 and the p.a.s. pump??

Wishbone check - Jack one side up onto an axle stand. Get a hefty screwdriver/small crowbar and try moving the wishbone in bothe front and rear mountings. You'll easily spot excess movement, they shouldn't travel more than 3 or 4mm if they are OK. Normally the rears that go first (vertical ones).

Forgive me if i'm being a numpty but aren't the fronts vertical and the rears horizontal?

There's a VERY good "how to" on changing them ...  I know ... I followed it !!

Nowt about checking them ... WIM told me mine were FUBAR .. they also checked the fitting - for free - when I took it back to have the geometry set after changing them ..

Also worth checking the anti roll bar drop links while you're there.

No,the vertical ones are at the rear of the engine bay

Omega A ( i.e. Carlton ) was the opposite way round.

could be worth checking the damper strut too.

p.s. aftermarket wishbones last no time at all - best option is to put GM bushes in your old wishbone.
