New rocker gaskets, improved economy?
« on: 19 April 2010, 23:54:52 »

Been putting it off but as more oil dripping onto exhaust (getting embarassing!) and plug holes full of oil, about time to sort. Anyway, all booked in on Friday along with heater bypass valve (losing coolant, no oil in water, no water in oil so I assume HBV is the cause, garage will check anyway).

Now, I've been getting 20-22 mpg average, 27 or so on a long run. Will this improve? I ask as the manual I had was better on mpg, my dad's old 2.5 auto was better as well IIRC. No misfires or anything, engine pulls pretty much as I'd expect. I don't have a heavy right foot either (I leave that for my other car! :D ) and always get better mpg out of my cars than I see posted on forums for the various cars that I've had.

The cam cover gaskets have no effect whatsoever on fuel consumtion, and any car with a manual box will always give better MPG than the same car with an auto box.

If your plug wells, plugs and leads are damaged by the oil.....then you can be suffering worse economy.

If its not that bad, components not damaged etc, then no difference.

Should really be getting better consumption than that on a long run...my 3.0 auto does between 32-38mpg on a run...is it due a service perhaps??

The associated full breather clean might help.

Check also the breathers for splits
