I've just done all this for SWMBO's car. Swiftcover.com was by far the cheapest.
WHO? Apparently they are part of Axa, but everything is done on-line. Compared to some of the prices people are emntioning for their Omegas we must live in an expensive-to-insure area. The best quote is £236 inc legal cover & protected NCD for a 40 something woman with no points, on a 1600 Astra.
Didn't you know Bolton is one of the car crime "hot spots" of the country mate.

I don't live in Bolton though  ;) just next door! Mine's a BL8 post code. ;D ;D ;D ;D

One thing you can do is to push the voluntary excess up this will reduce your premium a lot.  My typical view is push it up to the maximum you can afford if you are unfortunate enough to claim.  No point paying for insurance when you can pay that part of the claim yourself.

You may also find that fully comp is as cheap because some of the big insurers (esure for example) do not offer TPF&T i think.

Consider restricted mileage as well and possible adding SWIMBO could take the premium down  (logic is that 'married' people are less likely to take risks

I'm paying £280, with 20 years driving experience, claim free and SWIMBO as a learner on the insurance as well.  Fully comp

some companies will protect no claims for 3 at fault claims

someone i know had an accident and ended up losing his no claims after his wife had "used a life" when she closed the automatic garage door onto the roof of their brand new top end Laguna :D

protected no claims discount is a con in my opinion.  Think of it like this.  you are mister insurance company and your customer has just claimed.  he comes to ask you for a renewal.  You reckon that he should get say a NCD of 30% because he has claimed (on a premium of £1000, so you want to quote £700.  Now this chap has paid you decent money to protect his NCD so you as nice mister insurance company say.  'as you have protected NCD you will still get a 50% discount.  The premium before discount is £1,000 so after your protected NCD the premium is £700.

Result is that the customer thinks he's got a good deal by protecting his NCD but actually the insurance company has just been making more profit from him.

My Parnter renewed her policy last time with Shella's Wheels, you know the one for Women only driver's. We normally put each other on our Policies for obvious reasons. She went through the quote with just herself as a driver to see how it would cost, cant remember the figure but it wasn't that bad, she then asked the question? how much more would it cost to add me as additional driver?

The quote was reduced a masive £75!.. just by adding me, whats that all about!.. Women only policy's ???

Last year I had a £250 quote from Bell via Confused but after confirming details over the phone (no changes) it became £309, so stuck with Esure at £279.

Due next month again  ::)

I got a quote from an ins co through confused. Their written quote was very cheap but looked like it had been written by a nine-year-old. I declined it and went with Norwich Union Direct. Only £35 dearer.
