Head Gasket replacement - Over heating
« on: 03 August 2010, 17:08:00 »

Hi/

Car lost power today. Suspected head gasket failure (white smoke and water out of exhaust pipe), this was due to the car overheating (fans never kicked in). The Omega is an ex-police MV6 with only 66,000 miles on the clock (W reg). Is it easy for the head gaskets to be replaced, i have replaced both rocker cover gaskets previously, so i have already stripped the top part of the engine. Any advice?

Thanks,
Jamie

Its quite a bit more involved then the cam cover gaskets. You'll have to remove the cambelt, cams, down pipes ect.

Depends on how much it would cost you to replace the car as opposed to fix it :-/

if you did all the work yourself you would be looking around £250-300 in parts including Gasket set, Waterpump, Cambelt and tensioners etc

450 will see the gaskets replaced, oilcooler, waterpump, cambelt kit and any fluids/filter required

im lucky that i can do all the work myself but some just havent got the choice.  at a garage i would figure about £800-1000 for HG change with parts.

I have no problems dismantling the engine, its just when coming to the cambelt and ensuring they line up when instaling the new belt etc. Any suggestion or previous experience?

Many Thanks

DVD available from the OOF shop for not a lot of money :y
You will need to buy/hire/borrow a V6 cam locking kit though ::)
