When it had been cleared it was OK, once i went above 70 mph, it popped on.
Engine still runs fine

If no spanner light on, if you can rev past 4k, if it starts normally when cold and hot, and as you say it appears to run with no problems I would hazard a guess that the codes stored were old i.e. not present

it doesnt sound like a typical crank sensor problem, which normally shows itself with the car cutting out and refusing to start, and often doesnt light the EML

Cam sensor is another possibility

2.2 Crank sensors are normally fairly reliable iirc, not like the v6 ones.

shame the 2.2 doesnt normally respond to the pedal trick to get code confirmation.

I would say AS reliable as the V6....and considerably more so than the earlier 2.0 16V

Thanks guys.
I am going back to get the connections cleaned and rechecked, then the code cleared.
4K rpm was mentioned earlier, is this a critical point?
is it a way of forcing a failure to show?

Thanks in advance.

With certain faults, when detected, a 4000rpm rev limit is imposed (not crank sensor mind).

Hence if once the fault occurs a rev limit is in place it helps pin point the fault a bit more
