Cooling fan coming on after every journey
« on: 27 October 2010, 10:57:31 »

Hi,

I've just purchased a 3.0L Omega Elite (2000).

I've notice that after pretter much every journer the radiator fan is coming on for around a minute after switching off the ignition. Furthermore, when the car has warmed up, the temperature seems to jump anywhere between about 88 and 94 degrees, is this normal?

Any help would be most appreciated.

After a long journey my fan does come on for a minute or so. This is normal.
My temperature is fairly constant around the 89 mark. It may get hotter on a very hot day, then the fans will kck in to cool the engine. HTH :y
The varying temperature could be a faulty thermostat.

Hi

Welcome to the forum.  My 2,5 V6 does the same thing with the cooling fan running after the car is switched off. I would say it is nothing to worry about,

Running temp is normal at about 95 deg I would say. Maybe you are seeing a big jump when the thermostat opens.

Good practice on the V6's is to have the right antifreeze mix using VX's red product. It wouldn't do any harm to let your coolant out and flush the system through to remove crud from the radiator unless it has recently been done.

My fans are alays on when I stop - the last mile through the town brings the temp up to fan threshold

Yes, as with mine it is perfectly normal for the fans to run, and those temperatures are as expected ;) ;)

Mine also; when returning home, the steep up-hill crawl to the house always brings the two front-fans into life (at half-speed) and they continue for a few minutes after shutdown/key out. ;)

Yes, me too - even in the cold weather, they tend to remain on for a minute or so. Also the temperature variation, especially when in traffic, there is quite a range - nothing to worry about  :y

I'm quite pleased this has been brought up because mine does it also! All the time, even when it's cold out!

don't forget that it's a two-stage fan, the lower ( slow speed ) is not much above normal running temperature.

Owning an Omega isn't going to help that at all!  ;)

In fairness, the V6 does pump out a huge amount of hot air. My fans don't always kick in, certainly not now winter is closing in BUT when I get out I often get hit by a short blast of hot air....that said...sometimes I leave the wife at home  :) ;) :D
