Not really, I'd take your friend up on his kind offer and see what happens...

A friend has suggested it might be the crank sensor and has offered to come over in the mornin and remove his sensor  and fit it to mine to see if thats the problem...

As its the crank sensor wiring that breaks down you could try finding the wire where it runs down the back of the left hand bank and giving it a jiggle.

Got me home from Greece last year.

Classic crank sensor symptoms. No guarantees unfortunately but I will be extremely surprised if it isn't your crank sensor.

Wow! A friend prepared to immobilise his own car to help you :y

The crank sensor wiring runs too close to the exhaust manifold and gets brittle and fails. It is installed at the factory tucked in with the oil cooler pipes. If your friend manages to extract his from behind the oil cooler pipes there is a chance it won't work after it has been disturbed  :(

Ok guys  well we abandoned the idea of immobilising one car to try and fix another lol but what a mate :) hey.
Anyway towed it round the corner to his house jacked it up in the air got under it took bolt out of sensor gave a it a quick wiggle and a kiss put bolt back and out of interest turned it over on the key and brooooooooooooooooom off it whent first turn so im guessing thats conclusive its the crank sensor unless moving the car a mile or 2 fixed something else lol but gonna order and fit new sensor and seee what happens :y
Thanks again everyone for your speedy concise answers will update if it turns out to be soemthing different .

Hi Rob, everything still points to crank sensor. They often work after being refitted and this will get you out of trouble but don't assume that it is fixed. Get a genuine GM replacement and at least carry it with you as it is likely to fail again (at the most inconvenient time of course  >:( )

When mine failed the AA towed me 10 miles home on a rigid bar. He got me as close as he could to where I wanted it parked and then I intended to use the starter (manual gearbox) to move it the last 10 feet. It started first turn of the key  ::) so I parked it but it wouldn't start again 30 seconds later.........
