Gasket sealant for oil cooler & cam covers
« on: 26 May 2011, 13:27:29 »

Apart from the obvious Vx black gasket sealer, is there another make / type suitable for this purpose, or does anyone recommend a particular brand?

Cheers,

I don't know the answer to you question but I'm really interested to know why you ask!

At four quid odd, there is no great saving to be made by buying some other stuff.  You have to get the gaaskets from the dearlers anyway so there is no extra postage or petrol involved in the Vx stuff.  What can you gain?

Just curious...   :question

and going by the title....

you do know cam cover uses Black and the oil cooler uses Grey sealant?

There will be a loctite equivalent, but dont know what they are, but as said, cheap enough in the UK anyway so little point in taking any risks.

Grey goo oil cooler cover

Black goo cam covers

Both Available from vx and probably mentioned in the relevant guides .... I would think?

Certainly the part no.s are on here somewhere.

Just make sure they don't palm you off with the "green goo "  because it won't work  :y

EPC is misleading, and will make dealers supply green stuff.  Insist on the black stuff, part number in the relevent Maintenence Guide that Marks DTM did

Thanks for the responses. I'll definately go with the Vx sealant and cam cover gaskets, but asked only through curiosity, as I've been away from car maintenance for a few years now.

Will also swat up on the maintenance guides before I start re-assembly.

Enjoying my return to DIY and doing things right, rather than paying a garage to do the work.
