Hazards flashing when car is locked
« on: 26 February 2009, 09:44:54 »

My ex-missus phoned me last night to say she has a problem with her Omega electrics. Every time she locks the car either with the remote fob or manually with the key, the hazard lights start flashing although no alarm sounds. She had the battery tested at a garage and they told her it was knackered and replaced it, but the problem is still there.

Some months ago she had a tow bar fitted and has since had intermittent problems with the indicators and hazards and I suspect it might have something to do with it. At the time, she took the car back to the place that fitted the tow bar but they said there was nothing wrong.

She's now unable to lock her car as she doesn't want to run the new battery down due to the hazard lights constantly flashing. Any idea's?

If she opened the bonnet slightly, locked (and alarmed) the car....

and then opens the bonnet fully, thus releasing the bonnet switch properly, does the full alarm go off?

I'll phone her in a while James and get her to try it if she's in.

Dont know quite what it will prove, other than if the alarm is actually going off, just silently.

There is something in the back of my mind about indicator issues that have been solved by 20 or so presses of the hazzard switch itself - to clean the contacts, dont know if that is worth trying as well?

Sounds to me like the alarm is going off, just no sounder. Mine does it occasionally ::) ::)

Yes, if the sounder batteries have started dying, someone has probably disconnected the sounder, I have done it myself.

So if this is the case, how can she stop it as the hazards start flashing as soon as she locks the car?

Easy fixes are to try pressing the button to disable ultrasonics, and unplug bonnet switch - 2 known culprits.

Hers is an estate isnt it?  in which case the rear 'boot' windows have sensors on em, again check these, have been known to be problematic.

If you have access to a decent car diag tool, you can read the alarm log to see which sensor is the culprit.

Hi Bob, Just saw this as I don't often look here( :-[)
Is this my old car?

I certainly never had any cause to touch the power sounder in my time with it and the only indicator problem I remember was when I managed to break the hazard switch when replacing climate bulbs - replaced switch ages ago, so I doubt that has anything to do with it.

Cheers

Hi Ian, yes it's your old car. I haven't heard back from her yet to see how she got on at the garage she uses. I've told her about the above replies and she was going to let her mechanic know.
Cheers, Bob
